replaced inverter on Presario...now I can't power on the laptop

PLEASE HELP!
I was replacing the inverter on my wife's Presario V2000 tonight. I think that a couple of the small, fine wires from the plug that connects the inverter to the video cable came out of the plastic harness. The computer still booted. Since I didn't have an extra video cable on hand, I tried slightly stripping the two free wires and inserting them into the pins on the plug. It still booted. Next thing I knew, I couldn't get the laptop to power on again. I reseated the RAM and the battery. No power. The charging indicator LED will come on if I plug in the AC adapter. Any ideas on what went wrong? Is this salvageable?

Thanks!

Do you know what cable it was? Can it be replaced? I suggest you open it up and see if those fine wires are shorting out your system. Replace the cable (see if there is a part number or label on that cable) as needed. Unless you are sure it is not the cable, then shall we move on to the next possible cause like the RAM, etc.

Also you can remove the suspected cable totally and hook up an external monitor. if it boots up, you're still in luck.

Re: replaced inverter on Presario...now I can't power on the laptop

Thanks for responding. It is the video cable, specifically the part that branches off and attaches to the left side of the inverter. The reason I doubt that it's the cable is that the computer was functioning even with two of the wires from the plug disconnected. I suspect that something got shorted in the process, although I have no idea what. My knowledge of laptop innards is very limited...

Is that the cable that also hooks up to the motherboard? Check and reseat them. Tape them into place or to insulate them as needed. Best way IMHO is to remove it totally (temporarily of course, just for isolation) and try to boot using an external monitor. if it works that way, you already eliminated the motherboard side and you can focus on the LCD cable side.

I believe it connects to the motherboard. I'll check and remove it as you suggested...I'll post the results. Thanks again.

Ack. I removed the video cable from the motherboard and am still unable to power on the laptop. Again, the charging LED comes on if I plug in the AC adapter, but that's the only sign of possible life I see.

ok... still with external monitor hooked up and LCD cable removed from motherboard, try the following:
1. remove battery and unplug AC from laptop and outlet
2. press power ON for 30 seconds or so (1 min. is fine).
3. attach battery and plug AC to laptop and outlet
4. power ON as normal.
