power jack workaround
I have a dell latitude d600 and am replacing the power jack. I want to do a workaround and relocate the plug off of the motherboard. Does anyone know which post is positive and which is negative on the replacement jack?

Re: power jack workaround
Hi,
i believe it is shown in the power brick label which output is + and - (check the label)... then match it with your DC jack.

Re: power jack workaround
What exactly do you mean power brick label? It isn't listed on the laptop cover anywhere that I can find and if it was on the motherboard then it isn't visible any longer. Is there somewhere else I might find it?

Re: power jack workaround
Ok I see what you mean. But what I'm replacing is the tiny piece that is attached to the motherboard inside the computer that the power cord plugs into. Sorry for the confusion. I want to solder a wire onto the motherboard and run it a couple of inches out of the laptop and wire the replacement jack to that. Then the power cord will plug in here instead of in the back of the laptop where it gets worked loose from the solder. I hope this makes sense. I just need to know which point is positive and which is negative so I don't wire it backwards.

Re: power jack workaround
i understand what you mean, in the power brick label you can see which is the positive or the negative component of the output jack. it also coincides with the input DC jack of the laptop. on the laptop side, just wire it as it is...
i am assuming your replacement jack is similar if not the same as the one soldered on your motherboard. so just wire is as you would if you would solder it into place. correct me if i am wrong but it seems you do not have a multimeter otherwise you would not ask which one is positive or which one is negative. i suggest you get one and use one.

Re: power jack workaround
this is what you want to do, right?
Example... from this to this and placing the latter to another location in your laptop.

Re: power jack workaround
Yes, thats exactly what I want to do. I'll get one tomorrow. I know I can easily ruin the laptop by doing this wrong but I'm doing it for my daughter and she didn't have spare money to pay a repair shop.

Re: power jack workaround
yup you should get one... you can harm the laptop if not yourself so be very careful in your repair. if you have an experience in electronics and soldering this should not be a tough one.
good luck. do post back the result of your modification. may be other members would like to see your mod and may be follow what you have done.
