video display

This is my first time to post a question. So if I"m in the wrong forum direct my to the right one. I replaced the back cover on my Gateway m520. The display worked fine until I did this, now the screen very dark. I have checked to make sure everything was put back right, I hooked it to my external monitor it works until the windows xp logo then the external monitor power button flashs yellow and never diplays the laptop screen. Some people say that it could be the inverter, some say the backlite, is there a way to test and see which one is bad. thank you for any information that would be helpful.

Hi willie64 Welcome to TSF
Is your desktop displayed if you look at it with a flash light?
If it is you may have disconnected the Back lite or Inverter. Or one of them may have quit.
