Screen issues on Compaq Presario 900

I have a Compaq Presario 900 that has developed a problem with the monitor. What it looks like is almost like static or "snow", like you'd have on an old TV. You can see what's on the page, but the colors don't look right, and in areas of the screen it looks...well, like static.

This has been intermittent. Sometimes the static comes and goes, almost like radio interference. Sometimes it will go for weeks without happening. But the past two days it has been pretty consistent.

Before I just assume my laptop monitor is dying, are there any other possible explanations for this--memory issues, power issues, software issues? Anything I should try before I pitch this baby or take it in for service?

Hi jmcq77,

have you tried it using external monitor? do try it first with an external monitor. that would tell you if it is your video card or not.

I recommend what fixmypc said. If you hookup an external monitor to the laptop and the picture comes out great then the LCD screen is bad. If not, then the videocard is definitely bad if you don't have any warranty on your laptop, motherboard replacement will be pretty expensive to fix.
