Question [SOLVED] Laptop screen failure

Hi,

my laptop screen recently has died on me. For over a year there had been a slight red tinge on start up, which went away as the machine warmed up.

Now the screen is so dark I can't see it at all.

Is there any way to fix this? Do I need a new screen? Can I get a second hand screen? Does anyone have a spare?

The laptop is a Sony Vaio PCG-GRX16MP with a 17" screen.

Thanks in advance.

Callum.

Question Re: Laptop screen failure

Yes, if I shine a lamp up close I can see the icons on the screen. It does sound like the backlight.

Can this be fixed?

Thanks for the quick response.

Cool Re: Laptop screen failure

simple to fix. Unplug and pull the battery, pop off the round rubber screw covers around the display and pull screws, gently pull out on the bottom middle of the plastic surrounding your lcd screen and pop it free. go up both sides and the bottom, or all the way around. in the bottom you'll see a green rectangular inverter board. check the wiring on both sides for looseness or damage. if none visible, unplug and dismount the inverter, check the number on it and replace it (ebay or internet supplier will havethem re-assemble and your back in the running.

EEK! Re: [SOLVED] Laptop screen failure

Thanks,

I found the part online after opening up the laptop and identifying the inverter.

I had to order the part from america but it should be here in 3-5 working days. I will let youknow how I get on when it arrives.

Callum.

Re: Laptop screen failure

Hi guys,

after waiting days for the inverter to arrive, I installed it and initially everything seemed back to normal. I then noticed that the screen was flickering faintly but this seemed to stop once it had warmed up.

The flickering gradually got worse until now I am back in the same position with no backlight. Interestingly the Inverter (while it lasted) did not fix the problem of the "pinky" discolouration, for a few seconds on startup.

Do you have any ideas? Has the new inverter now broken or can there be another reason for my problems?

Thanks again in advance,

Callum.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop screen failure

if you still see a pink hue... that is a sign of failing backlight.
