Laptop will read DVDs but not Audio CDs
I am working on a laptop for a friend. It is a Compaq Presario 6000 running Vista that is just over a year old. Out of the blue, the CD/DVD drive will read DVDs and data (software) CDs but it will not read an audio CD. It just flashes up a box that closes before you can read it. Trying to access the audio CD from the command prompt or in Safe Mode generates the error "The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error". On the suggestion of tech support, the laptop has had a destructive restore done. This did not affect the drive issue. In the Device Manager shows the drive is a Matshita UJ850S.
What can you suggest to solve the issue? NCJason |

Re: Laptop will read DVDs but not Audio CDs
I would look in your DEVICE MGR (right click on MY COMPUTER, select DEVICE MANAGER). Look for a YELLOW question mark for your CD. This is a good indication that you just need to update or reinstall your driver.
I would go to the COMPAQ website, look up the model of your computer and download a new copy of the driver. Reinstall the driver and reboot your computer. |

Re: Laptop will read DVDs but not Audio CDs
Everything is normal in Device Manager, there are no device errors or unknown devices. I can not find any drivers for the Matshita UJ850S anywhere or I would have already tried installing them.
