If you have a display on external monitor then your mainboard is fine,to see if it is a inverter problem shine a light on to the screen and see if you can see an image if you can see a faint image then either your inverter has failed or the ccfl lights are dead, it is posible that if the inverter failed it could cause the back lights to burn out to,goto the hp web sight and download the service manual it could be very helpful.
