Advent laptop powering up and down in continuous cycle

Hello,

Please help. My son's laptop has developed a problem, whereby it powers up and as soon as it loads the vista password screen, immediately goes into shutting down mode. when it shuts down it then goes through the same sequence time and time again. Has he been affected with a virus. How do i overcome this?

tap f8 when booting and from the boot options try
last known good configuration
to check for an infection follow the five steps here
