My DVD RW won't read a CD

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS740/W with a Sony DVD RW DW-Q58A. When I put a CD in it sounds like it's trying to run but then it stops. However, it will play a DVD.

What kind of CD are you putting on the drive? A game? music cd? If it's a CDRW cd probably the sony computer does not like the media, compatible issue wise. Ive had that happen on client's laptops before.

Try to put other cd and see if the drive detect them?

I've tried installation CDs and CDs I have burned on this computer. Only the DVDs are being read.

the laser may be dirty or gone
