Black screen zv6000

My daughters laptop went suddenly black 9 months ago and she has been using it connected to an external monitor. She bought a new laptop and I am hoping I can repair this one to give my son. I read many posts and I tried messing with the cover switch to no avail. Some posts talk about a screen replacement, others say a backlight, and others say change the inverter. Anyway to isolate the problem and is it something a novice can do? I know which end of a screwdriver to hold, but I am more a duct tape surgeon than a brain surgeon. Any estimate the cost of a repair if I send it to a service like Bestbuy? The people here were very helpful with the missing oleaut32.dll file problem and now I hoping to fix the screen problem. I am waiting for a new OS disk from HP and then I will reload XP Pro.

Re: Black screen zv6000

Testing the backlight is easy. There should still be an image on-screen that can be viewed in certain lighting conditions.

Think of it like a cellphone screen, it also has the lcd and a backlight. When the cellphone goes into sleep mode, it will usually shut off the backlight first. If you shift your phone around in sunlight, you'll still see your screen image until the phone fully enters its sleep mode.

So if it is just the backlight, you should be able to shift the screen around in sunlight/strong light and still see an image while the computer is awake.

As for the cost of replacement, I can't answer that. I still prefer the CRT on my desktop at home (better cost/performace for photo work), the LCD's at work are their problem and this is the first time I've owned a laptop.

Re: Black screen zv6000

I can see the shadowed images in bright light so I guess it is the backlight. I will let you know how this goes. Thanks.
