Reformatting Issues

I am trying to reformat and install windows xp on a Dell labtop and never had so many issues. I keep getting this error, 28616 MB DISK 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR].

I ran Derrik's Boot and Nuke and i still get the error when trying to format the HD using the windows xp home cd.

Any ideas here?? Im now lost....

Re: Reformatting Issues

Hi... a long shot but worth a try before you go and replace anything...

How about downloading Ultimate Boot CD (it has DBAN in it also) and use the other HDD wiping tools there (aside from DBAN). You can also do a reformat instead of using the XP CD.

Re: Reformatting Issues

I'd download an run diagnostics on the drive to rule out drive failure:

Samsung http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...ort_HUTIL.html
Seagate/Maxtor/Quantum http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...oads/seatools/
Western Digital http://support.wdc.com/download/
IBM/Hitachi http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
fujitsu/Seimens http://www.fcpa.fujitsu.com/download...es/#diagnostic

Re: Reformatting Issues

Hi again,

UBCD has Hard disk diagnostic tools... try the diagnostic tool matching your HDD brand. Run the diagnostic, I believe it should tell you something.

I sent you PM on how to clear out the drive. I suggest you run diags first and try to reformat using XP or Knoppix live CD if still this do not work ( probably HDD is shot already), then try the tutorial.

Re: Reformatting Issues

So were you able to boot using UBCD? Did it hang using UBCD?

Re: Reformatting Issues

By the way, at what point do you get the hang when using XP CD? Do you get the hang before format is started or during format process?

Also on the diags.. try the IBM/Hitachi Drive Fitness Test in UBCD.

Re: Reformatting Issues

Its hanging up right at 20% of the formatting process using the windows xp disk. its only past that point once and than it hung up during the xp install. Now I'm back to square one....

Ill try that test, thanks.
