Evil IBM Laptop: Power Shutdown Problem

I didn't see IBM in the listing, but am hoping someone might identify with this problem. Whenever I run a hard disk utility program, such as defragmentation or PC cleanup, the power will shut down on the unit. It even will shut down when I run the Windows update. It seems so long as I don't write to any significant degree to the hard drive, it remains powered up. I've changed the Power Management to never shutdown - until I get this problem resolved. It would appear to me that my problem is with the hard drive, but I've never experienced this type problem before. Any idea's? Thanks.

Re: IBM Laptop: Power Shutdown Problem

Just a brief follow-up. I've looked through the manual but haven't locked in on a possible problem area yet. I ran a CHKDSK last night and the hard drive checked okay. I ran a couple registry cleaners this morning and they found several errors. I fixed the errors and then ran one of the programs that was shutting me down. This one was dvdprofiler. Today, it operated okay, even with a large download of dvd data. I then checked my disk utility System Mechanic and when it got to the disk optimization portion, it shut down the laptop. I booted back up and ran the disk optimization utility from the disk properties section and it ran okay. Right now I am suspicious of my System Mechanic utility. My problem may be software related, rather than hardware. I left the unit on for over three hours this morning and no shutdown. Yesterday, when I first turned the unit on, after sitting idle for 9 months, the battery had to charge all the way up. Naturally my AC Adapter got very hot. Now, with the unit plugged it, and the battery charged up, it is running cool. Thanks again for your help.

Re: IBM Laptop: Power Shutdown Problem

Hi...

So it seems it was caused by an application after all.

By the way, IBM has a diagnostic tool called PC Doctor. It has a version for your R32. Try downloading it and run it on your laptop.

Re: IBM Laptop: Power Shutdown Problem

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I ran up on PC Doctor Friday evening. I ran through all the tests and they passed. That's when I started focusing more on software apps. I did have "PerfectDisk" installed on the laptop, but every time I ran it, it would shutdown. So, I've uninstalled that program, similar to the System Mechanic program I was using. So, I guess I will have to stay away from those disk optimizing programs for now. I'll probably experiment with a newer version of the program later and see if it shuts down my program. Regards.
