Evil Dell CD / DVD drive problem

My Inspiron 8600 is recognizing the cd /DVD drive and won't read disks. I tried my friends drive who has the same computer, and it did not work.

Hi captainpotato!!

Welcome to TSF!!

Can you clarify again the issue? You said your CD/DVD drive is recognizing all the disc, same goes to your friends computer, right? And the CD/DVD you put doesn't work on either one, is it right?

Re: Dell CD / DVD drive problem

Thanks for the welcome and reply! First I left out one key word. The drive tries to read the disk, but computer does not recognize the disk or drive! Under my computer there is no drive, only when I connect my external usb DVD drive. The driver for the internal cd / dvd combo drive is listed as Elby SCSI cdRom device, but it comes and goes.

Thanks

Re: Dell CD / DVD drive problem

You mean the drive appears and dissappears? Is it detected in BIOS?
