Vista driver issues
I bought my girlfriend a new Acer Aspire 5315-2142 laptop for Christmas with Vista pre-installed, and I'm having 3 issues.
#1 Her hp printer is *supposed* to be supported by Vista as per the hp site as well as the Windows site (there are literally no drivers to download on the hp site) but her printer certainly does not work. Vista recognizes the device but demands drivers and is unable to find them itself. #2 Similar situation with her Nikon Coolpix 5600 camera. Vista will not let her use it even though she re-downloaded the drivers and software from the Nikon website and successfully installed them. Whenever she plugs it in, Vista tells her it needs drivers. #3 I have a 500gb external usb drive which fails about 20 seconds into any transfer going to or from her computer-- Vista says the device failed, which it has never done on any of the half-dozen computers I have plugged into. It sounds to me like her computer has some serious driver issues, perhaps both with the motherboard and Vista itself. Is this a common problem with Vista? Is there a solution? I am getting rather frustrated because I rarely had problems like this with XP, and never one I couldn't figure out after a while. Suggestions? |

Re: Vista driver issues
#1 It's an hp deskjet 3650
#2 running the camera software install file as administrator did not resolve the problem-- it said it installed successfully, but when the camera was later plugged in, Vista still could not find the drivers. #3 The USB external I have had for several months. It works perfectly on every computer I have hooked it up to (at least 4) and never failed or had any trouble at all until I plugged it into the new laptop. It still works fine on every other computer, but any time it is connected to the new laptop it transfers for a few seconds and then says the USB device has failed. I suspected a power issue as well, but it has its own power supply and never has any problems until that demon Acer gets involved. I then suspected it might be a USB driver issue, but then this happened, which confused me even more-- I tried to trick the new laptop into getting the files off the external by networking my laptop and hers through my router. I plugged the external into MY computer, and tried to transfer. After about 20 seconds the external drive still failed! I took her computer off the network, reconnected the external to my computer, and it transfered just fine. I am super confused, but thank you so much for the help! |

Re: Vista driver issues
Hi DrunkardOfOz!!
For the HP deskjet printer, it seems like there is no any driver on HP website as you said earlier. But you can try to install the HP Printing Diagnostic Utility and see whether it can detect any problems with the printer. And about the Coolpix, I also can't find any suitable driver for this product. It seems like there is no any updates yet from Nikon regarding this issue. Finally, the Acer and external USB. Seems this cause me a little bit drowsy as well ![]() Let me try to get a assistance from my colleague on this case, ok

Re: Vista driver issues
longshot for the drivers - download the driver, right click it, click on properties, click on compatibility and select winxp compatibility mode, then try to install it.

Re: Vista driver issues
Thanks for the response-- sorry to be such a pain!!!
It occurs to me that since we got this laptop, NOTHING that connects via usb has worked properly-- is it possible that this is either a Vista or motherboard usb driver issue? I'm going to have her hook up her ipod to see if that installs/transfers properly, and a thumb drive, and any hardware she can get her hands on to see if any of them will work or not. I'll let you know how it goes. |

Re: Vista driver issues
Now added to list of things that Vista can not/will not install or recognize drivers for are: ipods and an optical usb mouse.
I don't think the issue is with the usb ports themselves, because when an ipod is plugged in, Vista says "You need to install drivers for your iPod". I have the latest version of itunes, and all my ipod software is up to date, but Vista swears it cannot find the drivers. Vista's solution?? Link me to Apple's website where I'm told to download iTunes (the exact same version I have), and so on in an infinite loop-- no matter what I do, Vista will not recognize ANY drivers for ANY usb devices, even if I'm positive that they are installed and I direct Vista to the correct folder. The usb mouse has worked on literally a dozen other systems just by plugging it in, but on this system, Vista freaks out, grabs a rifle, and climbs the nearest clock tower. ***?!?!?! If someone can confirm that this is purely a Vista problem, and there is no easy solution (I have little faith in the 'call Microsoft and they'll help' idea), I will just downgrade to XP and be done with this BS. |

Re: Vista driver issues
this problem is the same with the power supply plugged in? and not just battery power?
go into your device manager in safe mode go into control panel -system-hardware-device manager click view then show hidden devices are there any yellow flags? uninstall the complete usb tree in the device manager reboot twice let windows rebuild the manager

Re: Vista driver issues
No problems in the Device Manager in safe mode--
I uninstalled the usb tree, rebooted twice. Vista asked to reinstall my usb tree, but then (SURPRISE!), it couldn't find the correct driver software. So now the usb root hubs are no longer installed, windows is banging its head against the wall asking me what it should do, and now for certain nothing is going to work in those ports unless I can find the motherboard usb drivers online and get Vista to recognize them. Considering it won't recognize any of the other drivers I point it at, this does not seem likely to work. Could there be a bios setting or something that is stopping the computer from recognizing/installing drivers? Unless someone can pull some magic out or suggest a way to resolve this, I am going to have to return the unit. Last edited by DrunkardOfOz; 01-28-2008 at 01:07 PM. |
