Laptop Upgrades

Hi, i recently acquired a laptop from a family member and the battery doesn't work and the hard drive is a little small. So i am wondering if I need to buy special components, that are designed for the laptop or can I get any components for it? Also can I use any laptop hard drive for it or do I need one design for the laptop, same question for the battery.

Sorry if i repeated myself but i need clarification so I don't waste my money. Also i have never upgraded a laptop before so i need to be sure

Thanks
Greerere
