startup problems

lately, my laptop has been screwy. on startup, sometimes rundll error messages occur. while the system runs, everything is laggy, and the net just doesnt work. my laptop works on a wireless connection. besides that, occasionally, explorer doesnt run on its own, and i have to open task manager to run it manually. is this because of a virus or just some system malfunction? i'm guessing mroe system info is needed, but this is my first time posting, so please tell me what info is needed and i'll post it up

Re: startup problems

Hi drme and welcome to TSF !

This could be almost everything : hardware, software or some malware infection.

What's your laptop's brand and model ?

Please start with the errors in the event viewer : start => run => eventvwr.msc. Check the different sections there for errors or warnings. Double-click the errors and click once on the third button on the right then right-click in your post and paste the information there. If there are several similar errors (same source and same event number) then only paste the error once and tell us roughly how often it happens.

Re: startup problems

There's a numbers and letters code which identifies your HP laptop somewhere on the laptop (for instance Compaq Presario V4146EA or HP Pavillion ZE4123), tell us about it (look under the keyboard).

Are there any disk errors in the event viewer ? Please try and paste the errors related to one session (look at the times), you're probably getting the same errors each time you turn the computer on.

What's your antivirus and firewall ?

Re: startup problems

Its a Compaq Presario V3000. Recently it was reformatted, and i hadn't had time to install antivirus and firewall. A list of errors is below. hope that helps.
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Media Center Scheduler ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Flush: RecordingFile failed to write Invalid XML Operation..
The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that could be caused by the custom components running in the COM+ application, the components they make use of, or other factors. Re: startup problems

Which presario V3000 is it ? We need the exact model.
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Looku...x=0&submit.y=0

Which steps did you use to reinstall XP on that laptop ? Did you use the CD that came with the laptop or the recovery partition ?

You should never surf the internet without a firewall and an antivirus. If you don't have the XP firewall running (do you have SP2 installed ?) then you probably got some malware already. If it's ok for you to reformat and reinstall XP once more it's probably the fastest way to solve your problems.

If SP2 is not installed on the laptop by default then download the installer here. Download the latest version of the antivirus you'll want to use. Save those files to some CD or on an external drive (be warned that if you have a virus you could transfer it to your external drive, it's probably better to use a secure computer to download and save those files). Then use the recovery CD or the recovery partition to restore your computer to factory defaults. Don't connect to the internet (turn the router off to make sure) until you've installed service pack 2, enabled XP's firewall and installed your antivirus. Then reconnect your router and go to windows update to download the latest critical updates for your system. Don't surf the internet until you've done all this.
