Toshiba won't boot up?
I have a nearly new Toshiba Satellite U305 S5107 that is having major issues. This is my first post so let me know if there is some other resource I should be checking first.
I accidentally spilled water on it over the weekend. I quickly did my best to dry it off and do as little damage as possible but it appears I have failed. For a day I got absolutely no response what so ever. Then a day or two ago after leaving it a few feet from the heater and so very light hair dryer action it would start to blink when i pushed the power button. Finally it randomly turned on the other night. It booted up pretty much like normal, however the keys didnt work except for the arrows and some random backspace. and the cd drawer was not even recognized my the unit. I left it on and plugged in for a day and tried rebooting to see if it would improve. It shut off and won't turn on again. Back to no response when I hit the power button. It does absolutely nothing. Any ideas? |

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
I think you may have a damaged mainboard ,you most likely shorted someting out on the mainboard when the water got inside if it is still under warranty have the board replaced, i don't believe it is repairable and if it was it could be quite exspensive.

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
How much liquid was spilled on the laptop, what most likely happened is when you turned it on there was moister still in side and that could have caused the no power on issue you have know if you can take apart the laptop and see if there is any visible signs of damage on the mainboard, let me know and i will try to help out more.

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
i tried taking it apart as much as i could, but since i have no experince i didnt get very far... i took off the panels on the underside and removed what i think was the hardrive. i dont know exactly how much was spilled, or for how long. the bloody cats spilled an open waterbottle from my desk on it while i was at work...
I have searched for a write up on how to disassemble more of the unit but I can't find one. You know any places I can look? |

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
so i was able to figure out how to take most of it apart now. there was like corrosion on the main board that i cleaned off. i cleaned anything i thought looked dirty and still nothing. if you hold down the power button it blinks after about 45 seconds of holding it. as in the blue lights on the front that normally signal it is turning on. but they only blink really quick... then nothing
will toshiba warranty a new board considering there was accidental damage to the unit? i'm sure they can tell that... |

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
I looked for a manual but could not locate one,i think that the water did damage something on the mainboard it more than likely happend when you had powered it on, sorry i can't be of more help,if you do manage to get it apart let me know what you find, there are places that will repair the board but not sure of the cost,i emailed one of my tech friends and he just replied back and said that the laptop should never have been powerd on after the water had spilled on it the unit should have been taken apart and the components dried out,he said that trying to dry it out without dismantling it would not be sufficent,i hope this will clear things up a bit for you, again let me know what happens.

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
well i got it all apart and it is totally dry. but it looks like there was some sort of corrosion under the clear plastic stickon covers on the main board. i cleaned it off as best i could and i took a couple pictures if that would help.
it was on when it got wet. i turned it off when i got home. then waited a good 3 or 4 days with using a hair dryer on low to just try and air it out before it turned on. do you think i can get a new board under warranty even with the accidnental damages? |

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
if i got a replacement board. is that something i can switch out myself. now that i know how to disassemble the unit and all. or would i have to bring it some place to have the switch made. also, would i have to reload like my os and all, and would it recognize my hd and everything?
one more thing, how much does a mainboard usually go for if i end up paying full price? Last edited by thebikedoctor33; 02-10-2008 at 03:50 PM. |

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
You should be able to replace the board your self since you have the unit already apart, and as for your harddrive if the chipset is the same on the new board as it was on the old you will not have to reinstall your os,the new board will more than likely have the same chipset, now as for the cost if the board is from toshiba it will be very exspensive like probably upwards of $300 or more, your best bet would be to find a used one you could give ebay a try,let us know how it goes.

Re: Toshiba won't boot up?
Since you have it apart you can try and power the board up and see if it boots if it does not boot up remove the board and check under the board for any damage, most of the time if a component on the board has failed you might not see anything no burnt parts nothing to indicate it has been damaged,if you could post those pictures, let us know what happens.
