OS: Windows XP SP2 Home

Toshiba Satellite: CDRW/DVD Drive makes chrackling noises and wont read repair disc

HI! it's 5:35 am I've been working in my toshiba for the past 48 hours..
Toshiba Satellite 1115 -S123
Cleaned and just formatted 40 gig HDD
OS: none at this time (but until recently I had XP home SP2 installed)
History:
2 days ago: trojan virus accidentally installed by me on my system: no system restore, no internet access, a few executable files contaminted, and very likely MBR completely screwed up! as I was not able to load.
1 day ago. tried bootable USB, not supported by Bios, and Bootable CD to see if I can repair the MBR but turns out my CDRW/DVD Drive started doing a Crackling noise (you can hear the CD starts spinning and then sounds like the optical head on drive starts bouncing back and fourth).. I tried and Xp home bootable cd home made, I tried a 98 windows start up cd (working as I tried it on another system as a bootable unit), won't read them.
0 days ago: I disable my toshiba, got the HD out, I got some files I needed and wiped out the entire disk. I put the HD back as well as the entire unit back together (working, so no problems at all) and I tried the unit again this time with the repair disk that came with the unit.. but CD/DVD drive won't read it!...

questions:
1.Any other alternative to get an OS back into my system not using the CD /dvd unit?...

2. the seemingly hardware issue started 1 day ago while I was trying to get into recovery console with the xp home and DOS with the 98 startup bootable cds I made, and after I also tried the Recovery disk that came with my laptop which started normally but then I cancelled nicely before any destructable process would run

3. How much approx would it cost me to get the CDRW/DVd replacement unit (if that's the only fisable alternative)? I assume I would have to order it from toshiba as I don't plan to have them fixing it for me since budget is a constraint at this time and unit is 6 years old, way too old for warranty heaven

note: It's probably worth to mention the CDRW/DVD drive was functioning almost normally (except the DVD part but I always though it was a software issue as It would load a DVD , Open it and then the dvd software would crash and go into a debug program due to an unexpected exception... I figure it was software) before my trojan friend came and ruined an almost perfectly working unit... I learned my lesson with rootkits!! trust me... my Avg didn't even blink when my computer started acting up due to the trojan!! (and it all happened in 5 minutes approx)

good thing backups were made but now I don't have a way to get into my HD on my laptop unless I take it out and use it either as I slave on my desktop pc or thru the USB enclosure case!

Thanks for any help.. I Hope I was specific enough
