[SOLVED] Laptop will not boot [Moved from HJT forum]

I'm trying to fix my daughter's laptop. She began getting multiple ie windows opening about three weeks ago, to the point where she couldn't use the system. Then it went away. Last weekend it came back and now the system refuses to boot at all. Power up and shutdown before the bios kicks in. No floppy drive on the laptop, so no chance to use an emergency boot disk. Tried using the DVD to boot, no success. Running out of ideas, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Laptop will not boot

OK, an update. Pulled all the memory, reinstalled and connected an external monitor. System now boots to bios but doesn't see hard drive and consequently OS. Loaded XP install disk on DVD, XP loads but since the system doesn't see a hard drive, the install fails. Can't manually load device drivers (no floppy) so now doing trial and error to see if I can get the HD recognized.

Re: Laptop will not boot [Moved from HJT forum]

Hi Bill:

Things have progressed to the point where I have control of the system and I'm running a full virus scan of the hard drive. Afterwards, I will run Ad-Aware to get rid of any malware that may be lingering around. With any luck, by tomorrow I should have a laptop that I can return to my daughter.

Hi Abbott,
Is the system up and running now (not sure what you mean by having control of the system)?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill:

Yes, the system is up & running. Just performing maintenance for malware. We can close this thread.
