Cry Toshiba satellite sound problem

hi everyone..

i am new to this forum and i hope i posted the in the right category..

anyway, the laptop was ok this morning and then when i turned it on this afternoon, all the sounds were already screeching-- the startup sound, the sound when you click internet links--everything.. youtube sounds are screeching.. even the yahoo messenger sounds are screeching.

however, when i tried playing audio and video using VLC media player and windows media player, the sounds are OK- they're perfect!

i am using earphones by the way...problem persists when they're plugged or not... so i think it's not an earphone.

the laptop is functioning well except for this weird screeching problem..

thank you so very much!
