A6R Fan problem

I've had my Asus A6R Laptop for about 2 years, and a few months ago the fan started making this high pitched whining noise they so often like to do when the bearings give up.

I've tried cleaning up the fan and heatsink to make the fan run less, I'm even running at 20% CPU performence, but the slightest mouse movement sets the fan off again, and it's getting really annoying.

I figured my only alternatives would be to either live with it, or get a replacement fan. Anyway I had a few questions...

1. How long would you expect a fan to survive after the bearings fail.

2. Would applying thermal grease to the CPU and heatpipes allow it to stay cool enough to keep the fan from spinning so fast.

3. Where can I find replacement fans for asus laptops.

Help would be most appreciated.

1. After the bearing starts wearing out it won't be long before the fan freezes up unfortunately. It really varies from fan to fan, but I would say anywhere from a week to a month, although it could even be sooner.

2. It would help, but the problem is the CPU fan is an essential component of the system. There is almost no other airflow in the laptop and the CPU fan is what is cooling the radiator at the end of the heatpipe.

3. I would look at impactcomputers.com or eBay.

Thanks for the information.

I did not find a new fan for this specific laptop on impactcomputers,
but I guess I'll be able to find one using the model number on the fan sticker I removed when oiling the bearings. It did quiet it down a little.

Its good that it quieted down. Unfortunately fan assemblies can be difficult to find and the manufacturer does not usually supply them. Your best bet then is to look on eBay.
