Hard Lockups Without Anything in Event Log
Computer:
Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop 3.0 GHz HT P3 processor (Prescott core) (Avg. 57C) Radeon Mobility 9800 GPU (Avg. 60C) HITACHI Travelstar 100Gig 7200 rpm (Avg. 40C) 2Gig memory (Avg. 50C) Network: Wireless G 54Mb Linksys WRT54G Router Qwest Actiontec M1000 Modem 1536 / 416 Kbps Protective Software: NOD32 Anti-Viral/Ant-Spy - scans clean - updates every couple of hours AVG Anti-Spy - scans clean - manual scan weekly or as needed (not left running to avoid interference w/ NOD) - updated before every scan HijackThis - No unexpected entries This computer is experiencing hard freezes but only when running a bittorrent client. It requires a full reboot to recover. Freezes occur while attended and while unattended. Freezes occur after a random amount of bittorrent use. The period varies from minutes to days. Freezes are not dependent on a specific bittorrent client, but occur with each client that has been tried. Clients have been restricted to less then half of the available bandwidth, both up and down. Clients have had simultaneous connections restricted to 45 (default is usually around 600). I originally had XP Pro on this computer, when the problem began. I tried a new harddrive. I did a fresh install of Vista. I defrag the drive every week. I have the latest drivers for the NIC, and the GPU. The system doesn't overheat before a lockup, but does get very warm to the touch AFTER the lockup. (The typical temps are fairly warm, but are typical for this particular computer) It really feels like hardware, but I can't figure why a hardware issue would only show up when a specific type of program is running. The computer will run quite happily for weeks if a bittorrent client isn't running. Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing this? |

from the forum rules
P2P We believe that the main purpose of P2P programs is to illegally download and use copyrighted material of whatever description.
