Laptop RAM Problem (Or Not, I'm Not Sure) - Details Inside.

I want to play a game called Guild Wars which requires a minimum of 256mb RAM. My current laptop has 1 RAM slot & has a 256mb DDR stick installed. Guild Wars runs pretty badly with this amount of RAM so I decided to purchase a 1gb stick off eBay for very cheap (£20).

When it arrived I installed it & every time I tried to play GW it would crash the cause the "blue screen of death" to appear & the whole laptop would restart which never happened with the 256mb stick.

I thought that the problem was faulty RAM so I've now purchased a PNY 1gb DDR stick from a reputable shop in the hopes that it will work & it was £60.

I don't want to open the packing & install it though because they said that once it is opened returns can not be accepted, so I'm just checking on here that it WAS infact faulty RAM & not a problem with the Laptop itself & by installing this new RAM I'll still get the same problem.

So can you tell me whether my laptop will experience any problems by installing this new RAM or whether it will be fine & the problem before was just faulty RAM.

My laptop is Compaq Presario R3000 & the specs are here - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...&lang=en&cc=uk

The guy at the shop said it could be because the laptop is a few years old & the BIOS may not be recognizing it, therefore causing the game to crash & the laptop to restart. Although I can't see how this is as EVEREST showed the laptop as having 1gb RAM & everything ran fine except the game. Also, it can't be a problem with the game because it ran with no crashes when the 256mb stick was installed.

Thanks.
