Dell Notebook Inspiron 5160 Power problem

Hi supporters,

I have Notebook Dell Inspiron 5160, after some burning smell from the notebook, it does not power up any more.

Without the power adapter, when I press the power button all LED's do not show anything it is the dead notebook, the battery is inserted.

the power LED and Hard drive LED flash very fast when I connect the power adapter to the notebook, does not matter the battery or the hard drive is inserted or not.

what is the error code the two LED's flash quickly?
what component was burnt? I will open this notebook, if there is no trace of burning component on the mainboard, how can I pinpoint the blownup part so I can order new part for it?

Thank you,
Comcid

Re: Dell Notebook Inspiron 5160 Power problem

Hi Comicd,

First check that the burning smell wasn't coming from the notebook power supply which would be more likely to fail. If that wasn't it, it could have been one of the voltage regulators on the mainboard which might not have visible elements of burning on it.

Re: Dell Notebook Inspiron 5160 Power problem

I am experiencing the same difficulty with my 5160. Laptop stoppped charging then died. Noticed a burning smell from the back of the laptop. Now it wont boot. While the power is connected the 3 leds on the front flash continuously.
Does this sound like the voltage regulator.
Any help is much appreciated as i cant really afford a new computer.tested the power supply and its reading 19.5V

Re: Dell Notebook Inspiron 5160 Power problem

Unfortunately if the external power supply is fine then it is likely the internal power supply which cannot be replaced without a costly motherboard replacement.
