New battery causing System to turn off! on Sony Vaio

Hi,
I'm having a Sony Vaio PCG-V505BP
running win xp pro.
No problems while using old battery. everything perfect, but the battery's life is over- charge doesn't last for more than 20 mins.
So I bought a new battery (new one 8.8 mAh old one 4.4 mAh)
put it in, windows booted, then
*BLINK*
the system goes off.
Thought the battery might need charging. So plugged it in and went to the BIOS while the battery was charging. Shuts down again
everytime Itry to start, it shuts down.
Checked for overheating- no sign.
Plug in the old battery, works fine.
new one- POOF in 6 seconds.

Battery problem? Any ideas?

I would check to make sure the battery is right for that laptop, then also if the battery is actually any good to being with.
