Confused DVD burner won't recognize DVD-Rs

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215, with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K17LF ATA device. I can burn audio discs just fine, but I can't burn data or video, because my drive does not recognize DVD-Rs. The properties indicate the device is working properly, and my drivers are up to date. Is there any way to fix this problem?

Re: DVD burner won't recognize DVD-Rs

Those drives have what's knows as a "combo laser". Likely the wavelength you need for DVD is not working due to a hardware failure in the drive. It's probably time to replace it.

The only other possibility is an incompatibility with your DVD media and your drive. Have you tried other media brands?

Re: DVD burner won't recognize DVD-Rs

After looking some more, it looks like it is the device itself. I was hoping those evil words ("hardware failure") wouldn't be mentioned, but it looks that way. Well, time to whip out the warranty. Only three months old, and things are broken. Go figure.

Thanks for the help, by the way.

Re: DVD burner won't recognize DVD-Rs

Don't be in a hurry.
I had the same problem with my LG dvd writer.
Problem turned out to be with burning softwares.
Everytime I started to burn a DVD-R or DVD+R, it halted saying there was only 380 mb space in the drive. This happened with 5 different DVDs.
So I tried express burn- it never got down to burning.
F*** I thought, must be my burner. hardly 5 months old.
Didn't give up because I needed it bad that night.
So tried this opensource burning software called Infra recorder
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
and believe me, worked like a charm. NO hassles no BS, small neat software and job well done.
Burnt DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs no problem.
Give it a go before you give it to those support B*******. Just don't trust those guys with my data or my comp.
