Need a good student laptop

Hi guys, first of all, sorry for making two help threads (my other thread is in the building topic), I'll offer my (limited) advice to people to even it out :)

Anyways, this christmas I plan on buying my sister (a university student) a new laptop as she's been complaining about her current one.

As a student she'll be looking for something ideal for word processing, internet research, and all the other things that come with a student laptop.

Also I'd prefer if it didn't cost more than my house.

Thanks again!

Budget: How much money are you willing to spend on the laptop?

Anywhere between $600-800

Screen: What size screen do you want, and do you need widescreen?
At least 15'

Brands: Are there any brands you want or don't want to buy?
I haven't had much experience with laptops so this is entirely up to your judgement.

Mobility: How much will you need and how long does the battery need to last?
As long as possible.

Durability: Does this laptop need to be sturdy or durable/semi-durable?
Nope.

Multitasking: Will you be multitasking with this laptop and if so, how much?
Not especially.

Gaming: Will you be gaming and if so, how much and how new are the games?

Nope.

Calculations: Will you be doing any intense calculations or multimedia encoding?
Nope.

Storage: How much storage will you need and what will you be storing?
Shouldn't need too much storage.

Optical Media: Will you need to burn any optical media like CDs or DVDs?
Nope.

Operating System: Do you want Windows XP or Vista, or Linux compatibility?

Vista/xp

Location: What country do you live in?
Canada

Thats nice of you to buy your sister a laptop.

Sorry for the late reply. Take a look at these:

This will be a good laptop that will fit the budget:

And this will be good if you want to spend a little more for a very high quality laptop:

Woah, I forgot about this thread for awhile.

Thanks Matt, I'm Canadian but that doesn't matter, I can use this laptop as an excellent reference.

I'm skeptical, but I heard somehwere that you need at least 2 gigs of RAM to run vista well, I'm 99% sure this isn't true but could you enlighten me on this subject?

Re: Need a good student laptop

You don't "need" 2 gigs of RAM to run Vista, but it is "recommended". It'll run just fine on 1 GB.

Re: Need a good student laptop

Well, as you know, we do have it here in the US, and I'm sure a lot of the retailers ship their products to Canada. So I'd recommend waiting until then to purchase a laptop.

The following webpage has a list of ads for black friday. There's only a few of them now, but as time progresses, there will be more. Eventually, you're likely to find some very good prices on laptops.
