Will not fully shutdown/hibernate/stand by

I just purchased a refurb Dell Vostro 1500. Two weeks old. Recent software installed consists of AVG 7, Sunbelt Personal Firewall, Eclipse Europa and a few games/insignificants. Everything has been fine so far, except two days ago I told my machine to shut off in the morning, closed the lid, and stuck it in my case. Three hours later I went to pull it out of my locker at school and the case was extremely hot - turns out the machine didn't shut down fully. The screen shut off, fans shut off, and yet something (perhaps hd and cpu) still stayed on, producing a lot of heat. In addition the power, wifi, battery, and hd use lights remained on. From this half-off, half-on state the power button did nothing. I had to force shutdown. The same thing happens when I attempt to go into stand by or hibernate. I have had a lot of problems with my machines in the past, but nothing like this. I am clueless. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Will not fully shutdown/hibernate/stand by

Hi - I have a new Dell Vostro 1500, too, that will not always hibernate. Did you enable your hibernation? Just something to check in case you didn't. You probably already tried this but if not - just right click on your desktop and select properties. Then select screensaver. At the bottom of that screen is power - you can go there and select the power schemes you want for your laptop and click hibernation at the top to enable that. If i find out anything else, i'll let you know! Still working on mine! Have a good day!

Re: Will not fully shutdown/hibernate/stand by

Louise,

Yes, that was the first thing I tried, because at first I thought that the hibernation mode was buggy. I realized, however, that the problem does not just occur with hibernation. It occurs anytime you try to power down the computer to any state (shutdown, restart, hibernate, standby). Thanks anyway for your input, though.
