OH Crud!
ok, we just put a new hd in our dell inspiron 1100. I couldn't find the disc that came with it, so we used the disk that came with the Dell desktop.
It was going well...... UNTIL..... the windows screen was really small, and i was trying to fix that and it told me to reboot the computer and i did and now, it's on and running, but I think i told the computer to ignore the display and now after the dell and windows start up screens, it goes blank, not off, cause we can hear the hard drive and the hd light is on. It's just blank.... any suggestions???? thanks gina Last edited by TheMatt; 09-29-2007 at 04:25 PM. Reason: Fix vB code. |

Re: OH Crud!
I would start by booting into safe mode. It sounds like the Dell disk came with some preloaded video drivers which are incorrect. Safe Mode will use a default VGA driver which will allow you to uninstall the video driver and install the correct one.

Re: OH Crud!
Well, after over an hour on the phone with tech support from Dell, (yeah I know, itsn't that supposed to be an oxymoron these days??)
I must say they helped me solve the issue. It seems the disk with windows on it was a weee bit corrupted, (hey, but aren't we all?? ;]}}) I used a newer one and she helped me download some drivers because the drivers cd had vanished. It solved everthing!! I'm even typing on that machine right now. I was hoping it was a quick think one you dear souls could tell me, and avoid the hour on the phone trying to understand what the dell person would say......(I hate saying, "excuse me, could you repeat that AGAIN slowly?", like a moron, because of an accent issue) I really love this forum, everyone is so nice and willing to take those of us less talented in this arena through all the baby steps. Chocolate to you all! gina |

Re: OH Crud!
As a general rule you should not use an OS disk from another computer. I am still thinking it was a mismatched driver that caused the display to not work once Windows was loaded.
Glad you got it fixed.
