Re: Reclusive Laptop Challenge

Hi,
The 358956-001 is the part number for the CD ROM for a compaq armada 6500 series notebook. This one should work. Here is another link:
http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi...%3F&catsel=%3F
This list both CD Rom And DVD Rom with the aproppiate replacement part numbers.
Thanks,
Bill
PS. I do not think it is required to disassemble the laptop to find the correct CD-Rom

Re: Reclusive Laptop Challenge

I'd pop the drive out, drop it into an IDE->USB caddy and put the files onto the drive in some folder. Then I'd slap it back into the laptop and install.

Re: Reclusive Laptop Challenge

I would just do the following:

1. Signup here: http://www.ecosse.net/ (You said you had a dialup modem)
2. Get the drivers for the ethernet card

This should only cost you about 10 pounds if you are fast, And you won't have to go and buy a CD-Rom drive

lol, couldn't disassemble it anyway . Anyway, that link is very convincing! But I'm still unsure about the connector.

An Armada 6500, according to that link, comes with a Toshiba XM-1802B cd rom drive. Fair enough, but when I googled it to find a picture of the connector I didn't find any, but apparently according to this list of specs, it's an ATAPI connector. I searched image search for an image of an ATAPI connector, and got this.

Now although in the same position as my laptop's connector, it looks substantially different to my connector:

*worry*

Re: Reclusive Laptop Challenge

Hi,
I believe the CD-rom posted earlier will work as long as it is an armada 6500
Did you get a chance to look at Tech-Cameron's idea (If the modem works)
Also ebackhus's idea is also a good one (Thanks you guys for the ideas)
Here are a couple of links as to what ebackhus brought up:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812156101
http://www.cablestogo.com/product.as...=906&sku=17705
These are just another option, but the laptop won't due you much good without a CD-Rom.
Thanks,
Bill
