No internet on my laptop...HELP

Ok I have a Compaq laptop with windows XP, it's about 5-maybe-6 years old, but has all the updates. I'm having trouble getting the internet hooked up on it. My desktop has the cable modem with Time Warner Road Runner and having great service with them. I've tried calling them but the wait time is FOREVER!! I need a newbe step by step to get the laptop up and running so I can use it for school and XC2 tuning with my T-bird.

HELP!!

I'm assumiing your trying to connect via cable? Are you sure your ethernet card drivers are loaded and updated?

Go to your Device Manager:

Start->control panel->systems->hardware tab.

Go to the network menu and see if an ethernet device is listed there.
