Bios Nec Versa M540
Hello, i have a NEC VERSA M540 notebook. I recently did a reboot, starting from scratch with Win XP. I downloaded all the drivers off of the NEC support site. Apparently the BIOS update i attempted was the wrong one... leaving me with a labotomised computer.
![]() The screen remains BLACK, but it does attempt to spin/read a disk. i have a feeling that if i use the correct (BOOTABLE) BIOS update i may have a chance... I have also been told if i remove the CMOS BATT for 10mins or so it may reset itself, but where is this friken BATTERY ![]() So any help would be much appriciated, as NEC just wants to sell me a new computer, and isn't interested in helpin me fix mine for under $1,500!!! Thanks in advance Kano

Re: Bios Nec Versa M540
Hello Kano and Welcome to TSF.
I'm going to have your thread moved to the Laptop section of the Hardware forum so that you may get better assistance. I don't see any of our laptop guys online right now so they may not respond until tomorrow. |

Re: Bios Nec Versa M540
I also have this problem, I've taken out all the parts under the screwed doors, and then replaced them & it booted up. I've now run disc cleanup, asked it to defrag, but it said it didn't need it & now I'm running checkdisk.
I was able to do this before, but then it shut down & wouldn't boot for 3 months untill I carried out the above. I don't know if it will be ok, or die again. It's a lovely screen, far better than the acer I got to replace it. Any ideas please? Andy |

Re: Bios Nec Versa M540
UPDATE ON ABOVE.
Next I ran Check disk, which went all the way thru, no worries. I then did a couple of re-starts, windows update + restart, then put the lid down & went to bed. However, I did notice that it was flashing one of the lights on, which usually means it has not hone into hibernation or low power state, like it used to. Came to it this morning, pressed the button, it stopped flashing, cd drive spun for 3 secs, hard drive led came on for a couple of secs, and again black screen, and nothing. OS is XP pro, serv pack 2. Does this give anyone any pointers? Andy |

Re: Bios Nec Versa M540 Further Update
Hi again,
Well, after 2 hrs it finally started again & crashed giving the following message. See pic attatched. This is what happened in the very first instance in April, & a couple of times since. Is this making sense? Andy |

Hi mate,
Did you get an answer on your question below? I have the same problem with my Versa M540. Quote: Hello, i have a NEC VERSA M540 notebook. I recently did a reboot, starting from scratch with Win XP. Re: Bios Nec Versa M540
Hi mkuzian,
I did as they said, ran Memtest, it went all the way through, almost... Then nothing, just the black screen & sounds from the cd drive. I keep trying it every few weeks, but nothing. I asked a freindly computer guy who does my network stuff, if he would mess about with it when he was slack between jobs for little charge, he thinks it's memory, but then again thats another $100 or so & another $100 here & another $100 there, it soon mounts up! I've just bought an asus eeecepc for $600 australian, just to chuck in my bag & drag out to do a quick job, but the NEC has a ripper screen!! Good luck, Andy |
