Toshiba Satellite A105/4344 DVD probs

Hi there,

I am running a Toshiba Satellite A105/4344 1.66GHz, 2GB Ram.

I am having trouble playing DVDs or CDs through Media Player or any other media player. DVDs seem to play at about 80% speed and CDs tend to play slow and have clicking noises throughout.

Additionally, if I am using the drive to upload CDs to Itunes a) it is very very slow and b) slows down all other operations on the PC.

I do not believe it is a hardware prob as I can play DVDs ok using Media Center i.e. with out turning the PC fully on

Any ideas??

Shaun

Hi Shaun, and welcome to TSF!

Go to Start > (Settings) > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer Management > Device manager > IDE/ATAPI controllers > Secondary IDE Channel > Right click > Properties > Advanced settings tab

Make sure it is set to use DMA and not PIO. Repeat this for the Primary IDE channel.

Re: Toshiba Satellite A105/4344 DVD probs

Thanks for suggestion but already set to DMA. Any other ideas?

I had a check on a DVD last night and it seems to run about 90 % speed, most noticeable on music with loud clicks as though the speakers are shot (which they are not).

I work at sea so this is my main means of watching DVDs so i am pretty keen to get it fixed

Check your CPU usage when your computer seems to slow down. If it is high, what process is using up the CPU time?

Re: Toshiba Satellite A105/4344 DVD probs

Hi there,

Tonight, playing a DVD doesn't seem to slow down the rest of the PC (I mainly notice this when uploading a CD to Itunes). The DVD is very slightly slow and the sound is kinda badly digitized and there are lots of clunking/ clicking noises.

System Idle Process has about 90% of CPU with Win DVD about 7%

When uploading CD to Itunes System Idle Process 50-70%, Itunes.exe 20-40%, I Explore.exe 4-10%. When a sound plays on PC when uploading CD i.e. when a freind logs onto Messenger, this sound is also distorted and clicky.

Thanks

Shaun

Re: Toshiba Satellite A105/4344 DVD probs

When did this start happening? If it is a recent issue, then I would perform a system restore to a couple days before this became an issue. The steps for using the System Restore are detailed here.

Re: Toshiba Satellite A105/4344 DVD probs

I have this same problem. It occurs after security updates to Avira Antivir and then again with AVG. Usually a system restore would fix it entirely, but this time I don't have a good restore to date. Any suggestions on what I can do other than an XP reinstall.
