hp compaq presario 2800 - crashed

hi there
I was wondering if anyone is familiar with these laptops, it is a 2004 model 512mb and I don't know too much more about it. I was surfing the net looking at totally innocent stuff and all of a sudden a error message filled the screen (not long enough for me to read it), and she shut down. Now it will not boot and HDD is not working. laptop has recently had XP Pro reinstalled and was running fine for a few days. It's had a hard life so we are thinking the HDD is physically damaged ,if not, we are just wondering if this is a common occurrence in these laptops, ?????

tap f8 when booting and from the boot options try
last known good configuration
if that does not get you in d/load the h/d makers diognostic utility and run it on the hard drive
