New Laptop real slow!
Hi. I've just bought a new entry level (I guess) laptop Acer Aspire 5310 c/w Vista 32 basic for my daughter's school needs. I plugged across the phone line from my netcomm Mega-I-modem 56 that supplies my old 800 desktop with everyday 48K speed, and this laptop runs at only 31.2K. Checking the modem - a HD Audio Soft Data Fax modem. I tried updating the drivers but Vista tells me it's the best.
driver is 7.64.0.50Acer tells me it's the line, but it's not! It gives me 48K everyday. Is there another brand that might have a better driver and how would I install it. Or are there init strings etc that might help. At present it's really slow but 46-48K is good, and responsive. Last edited by Fathom; 08-21-2007 at 10:19 PM. |

Re: New Laptop real slow!
Hi Baldie,
Would Vista slow the modem? Desktop is XP. It seems to handshake 3 times before settling. Just thought an HP, Compaq or other make might have a better driver but a manual install is testing me... Thanks kalkalasch, That's really helpful, yo bro. How about these - colour, centre, copasetic.... Fathom |

Ahhh!! Non-American spellings!
When you connect are you using the same phone outlet and same cord? I'd try dial-up on mine but I doubt it works on digital phone and I don't have a dial-up service to test with. :(

Re: New Laptop real slow!
Hi ebackhus,
Yeah cheap shot I know. Yep the two are only 3 feet apart so I can swing the phone line to either the Netcomm or Laptop. I've turned off the trial norton which helped and removed all the tabs and yahoos and got most of the screen back. fathom |
