Laptop Monitor Brightness Problem

My friend has a laptop and he said all of a sudden recently his monitor has been very dim. He said he cant remember doing anything differently. I know I can try increasing the brightness with the fn button and tapping the up arrow, but could it be something else? Like the video card?

It could be the "Gamma", which is controlled by the video card. Without knowing which video card you have, I can't give you specifics on how to get to it.
