Hi, Im sure this question has been asked before so hopefully its an easy one to answer. I currently have a Dell PC and am moving house soon. So i am getting a laptop but have no idea how to transfer my thousands of music files (itunes!) and photos etc to my new laptop. Please help! Also i want to have wireless internet at my new house, i have no idea how to go about this. And if any one has any recommendations as to what laptop is good for what im looking for then great thanks kat |

Re: Help Needed!
Hi, and welcome to TSF!
![]() If the music is in your My Documents folder, then you can simply burn the music to a data CD or DVD and transfer that to the new computer. I don't know how iTunes works, though, so there might be a special option from within the program to back up the music files.

Re: Help Needed!
Hi and welcome to TechSupportForum.
![]() To answer your first question you can buy an external hard drive to transfer you files (also you could burn many backup discs if you have CD-R's or DVD-R's). I would recommend a backup drive of about 50GB to store your music files and photos. The other question has to do with wireless networks. The first thing I must know is do you have broadband internet. Meaning to connect to the internet do you use a RJ-45 (Ethernet) or RJ-15 (Dial-up Telephone Lined). Also do you have a modem (sort of like a small box that has many flashing lights because you will also need this). |

Re: Help Needed!
Thanks for your replies,
I have considered burning onto discs my files from my documents etc but most of my Itunes is either downloaded files from Limewire or from cd's so i guess i would need one of those external hard drives. I have actually seen them around and thought that might be what i was looking for. They cost around £80 i think? About the internet. We have BT Broadband. So not a dial up one. *looks for a modem* yes we have one of them, a BT one. I heard i would need a wireless router? but i dont know what that is |

Re: Help Needed!
It is basically a device that hooks up to your cable modem and transmits a wireless signal. This is an example.

Re: Help Needed!
Yes you will need a wireless router, in US Dollars my NETGEAR router was about $150.00. I first recommend a NETGEAR Router. Second This is how a router connection is set up.
![]() This is how a router is set up. It should look the same with your computer. You can use the link that the TSF worker put up to buy the actual gear.

Re: Help Needed!
Ahh ok its becoming clearer now. Also i just looked on my Itunes and there is an option to back up my itunes library to a disk BUT will it actually play if all the songs come from various different sources?
Ok so bascially i need to buy.. Laptop, External Hard Drive (possibly) and a Wireless Router. Would that be all? thanks guys this is really helping! |

Re: Help Needed!
I would look and see if you can determine where the songs downloaded from iTunes are stored. If you can find those, gather them and all the other songs you have stored into one folder. Then burn that folder to a DVD or copy it to an external hard drive.

Vista also has the file transfer wizard EDIT Run a virus and malware check on the system before transfering files.
