Vaio Laptop Speakers: No Audio

Okay, I've just recently gotten a VGN-FS680/W Sony Vaio Laptop from my company's CEO. It had belonged to his son and at his request, I wiped the laptop with the exception of the recovery partition. I do not have the recovery CDs nor can I get them. I reinstalled with a freshly purchased copy of WinXPsp2. I've installed all the factory software as listed on the drivers page from this model of laptop. However, since the wipe, it no longer plays the tinkly Vaio music during POST. Once I get into Windows, I get no sound from the built in speakers, but I do get sound through the headphones, although in games voice tracks to be muffled or distorted. I have since installed all the various updates, and even tried updating to the RealTek High Definition Audio drivers 1.72a. Has anyone ever run across anything like this before, and if so, how did you fix it? If not, any ideas?
