BSOD stop error 0x0000007A involving Ftdisk.sys. while formatting and reinstallation.
chkdsk /r from recovery console reports "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."
Im assuming the drive bad?

Take a look at this GG: http://www.techsupportforum.com/827480-post44.html Its probably a Hitachi Travelstar drive.

UBCD from my sig also includes a lot of the bootable diagnostic utilities, including the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test.

I used Microscope 2000 diagnostic utility and the butterfly seek test and the read test both error with time out error 80

Does that mean it cannot be repaired?

Most likely.. I would double check with the DFT before buying a new hard disk though.

Ran Hitachi's DFT, came back with a failure code of 0x70, I think the drive is toast

Get a new one. The Inspiron 1100 uses a standard IDE laptop (2.5") hard drive like most laptops. When getting a new one, just make sure you don't get a SATA.
