Gateway MSX6422
My laptop fan stopped working. I took my laptop apart to check a speaker that wasn't working, as I have done many times before. When I reassembled it the fan will not spin. Tried another fan and it will not spin either. The LCD lights up, the logo displays, then it says turn off computer and check system fan. Can't find any visable evedence of a problem. Any body have any ideas??

Dust out the fan with air if it is dusty. Turn on the laptop and when you do, give the fan a spin and see if it will start up with some help.
This may sound obvious, but did you remember to plug the fan back in?

Thanx for the response. Yes I tried that. I also took out the HDD and memory with no change. I've tried all the logical stuff. I read somewhere that if an AMD processor goes bad, the fan will not start. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? I'm really open to any help...

I don't think your processor is bad. Can you actually boot or does the computer not allow you to?
Also, does the fan spin if you move it with your finger? Does it seem like something is obstructing it?

No it will not boot. It only goes to the Gateway logo, then the system info text says turn off computer and check system fan. The fan is clean and very free. As I said I replaced the fan with a known good one with no change.

See if you can test the voltage coming out of the fan port connector with a multimeter. It should be putting out 12v or under. Remember to make sure you test correctly with the positive and negative probes.

Note where the red and black wires are connected to the motherboard. Unplug the fan and touch the black probe to the pin the black wire was connected to and touch the red probe to the pin where the red wire was.
Make sure your multimeter is set to DC voltage and is set to the correct range if it is not auto-range sensing. When you plugged the fan back in, did you make sure you plugged in the right way? With laptop fan connectors, it sometimes is possible to plug the fan connector in backwards.

Then the fan isn't the problem but for some reason the fan port. I don't know what would have caused this.
Can you get into the BIOS?

I believe if the CPU is cool enough you can get past the screen even with the fan not working.
Try opening up the laptop so that the CPU/HSF assembly is exposed. Then, prop the laptop up and point a house fan or something similar at the HSF assembly. Then, turn on the laptop and see if it displays the error. You might also want to get some thermal paste and apply some fresh thermal paste to the CPU.
