Averatec Laptop CD problem DVD OK

I bought a AV3360-EH1 in March 2005. About 6 months ago I started having problems with my DVD drive. It would take several times to push the eject button before the drive would open, burning CD's would fail about 1 out of 5 tries, and it would grind about 3-4 times before it would be able to read a CD. Now it does not recognize a CD at all and I am still having trouble opening the drive. However, I can still play a DVD movie, no problem.

I have replaced the DVD drive...very expensive without a warranty and I am not able to return it! The new drive reacts the very same way!

I am not able to boot with the recovery CD because it does not recognize it.

Have you heard of anyone else that has had this problem and how I might fix it?
