A Couple of Questions
First off, I have an Acer Aspire 5000 with 512 Megabytes of RAM and 80 Gigabytes of Hard Drive Space (partitioned into C:\ drive and D:\ drive) with an AMD Turion64 Processor.
I was wondering if it's smart to install two separate OS's (I don't know if I should go for Linux or Vista) on this Laptop. I also wanted to know what Linux version I should get and what Linux is for. Another thing that really has been bothering me is that I always have 55 processes or more running on this laptop. I don't which ones are necessary to keep running and which ones to end. To add to this question I was wondering if I could permanently terminate processes from ever starting up again. I always see aolservice.exe on the process list and I don't want AOL on my computer at all. I have AIM, but I really don't know if this process is associated with it since aim6.exe is another process that runs when AIM is open. Any answers are appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

Re: A Couple of Questions
I basically you can install two OS's but youd probably have to split one of the above partitions to two.
A good version of Linux to get started on is UBUNTU, do a google search for it. As for what linux is for, what do you mean? Its basically a OS, but more of a command line input OS in the terminal, and its open source so its free. Its similar to MS DOS. You can also get X Window plugins to make it look like windows, so you can interact with it as you would windows rather than typing all the commands like change directory etc.

Re: A Couple of Questions
My friend has Ubuntu.... What is the best version available... Also, you mentioned that it's basically Windows so is it just a waste of space then?
Also, any answers from anyone to any of my questions will be appreciated. |

Re: A Couple of Questions
Linux is not the same as windows, its different in a lot of ways, it has its advantages over wndows as does windows over linux in other ways. Basically though if you are just looking for the second OS its not worth it, because you'd probably need to learn the unix commands for a system you wont really use.
As for Vista, you can run it on 512mb (minimum), but as terrister said, 1gb is probably best to run it.

Re: A Couple of Questions
I've run Vista on my laptop fine before (although there is no transparency). I've removed all of the programs that I don't want on my computer from Add/Remove Programs already yet the processes are still there. That was the biggest problem I have had with this computer. Does anyone know which ones are unsafe to end so I can avoid ending those while ending the troublesome processes instead?
