Compaq Presario 1690 laptop ?

I'm ving a little trouble with my Compaq Presario 1690. A few days ago the program Mcafee said I had a bug in a file and it was recommended that I delete it. So I did and now when on startup i says" Bad command or file name" "press any key to continue" . It works fine after that but I would like to replace the file and I have no idea what it was. I am running Windows 98.
I do not have the Compaq recovery cd if that would be any help.
Is there any way I can find out the file that is missing and program it back to my start up?
Thanks

Re: Compaq Presario 1690 laptop ?

For future reference, never delete a program. Uninstall it. otherwise alot of settings remain in the registry. Especially where antivirus software, especially norton, is concerned, it's even more critical. It's very possible to have bits of Mcafee running as well as norton. I know first hand that norton processes might continue running even when uninstalled.

Try enabling bootlogging by tapping F8 as soon as you start the computer. That will take you to an advanced startup menu, choose bootlog. after you've booted, check your root directory for bootlog.txt - open it with notepad.

Re: Compaq Presario 1690 laptop ?

I tapped F8 and got to the menu where bootlog was and choose it. It booted and that "bad command or file name was on the log then in went to my computer. I tried looking for bootlog and I tried it in the Run program and search for files and folders and only got Catroot and FSProot and could not find anything else.
When im on the desktop how do I find bootlog? and why did you tell m eto boot this way?
Thanks

Once in Windows, go to Start-Run, type in MSCONFIG and press ENTER.

Can you give us a list of what's there?

I suspect that the infected file was being called at startup. We just need to remove the reference to it.

Re: Compaq Presario 1690 laptop ?

When I go to start -run and enter msconfig I get to System configuration utility. and in there I have the options:General,Config.sys ,Autoexec.bat,System.ini,Win.ini and Start up.
And in each of those catagories it has many choices to check.

Which of these is safe to get rid of? Start-up is slow! I would like to know which one of the files is the "bad command or file name"
