Re: vista made my laptop slow.

Your main problem is the 512mb of Ram, I wouldn't run Vista on anything less than 1gb. You can try turning off some of the visual settings which may speed up the performance.

Post Re: vista made my laptop slow.

Thanks Rebellion88, but Microsoft has specified the minimum system requirement of 512MB RAM, so it should work fine....
anyways.. I tried turning off some of my visual settings but the performance hardly improved...

also can you suggest whether I should go for upgrading my Laptop to 1 gb, or alternatively add a 512 MB memory stick.

Thnks,
Pamela.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

You can run with 512, even with aero, but you will get alot of "program not reponding" s. You don't need to close them, just wait a few seconds. Turning off aero makes little or no difference but aero isn't included with basic anyway

Pamela you should never run an OS on the minimum requirements. They will always cause the computer to run slow as hell belive me i have tested to see. Best thing you can do is either upgrade your ram to at least 1gig or reformat wtih xp. It doesnt really matter what you do becuase most of the features are bound to be off by default witha lappy with only 512 ram.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

I agree, running Vista on anything less than 1gb is insane, despite what microsoft say, it wont run properly. They only say that to broaden their market.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

With the extra Ram, you will notice speed difference I assure you. Boot times, loading applications, smooth performance and better application performance will be recognized. They say 512mb minimum, although what this really does is the very basic and will allow your system to run vista, this does not accompany other applications running at the same time and their performance. Your processor will be plenty for vista, its just your Ram that is letting you down.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

vista made my laptop slow right out of the box. just got it today and within the first 30 minutes of having it i reformatted to xp. so glad I did it! It has 1.5 GB ram and it was still pretty sluggish. I just could not get used to vista at all.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

I bought a new Acer laptop and had the same experience with Vista. It ran sluggish. Also the battery life was around 33% less under Vista.

At 1st I had it set up to dual boot Vista and XP. Later I formated and decided to just run XP.

Maybe they will fix some of these problems with the 1st service pack. Until then, I am fine running XP.

same here. when a fix or another service pack comes out, I will probably upgrade to vista. The look and feel of it was okay, but it was just too slow for my liking and I am very happy running xp sp2. I can remember back in the day when xp made its debut and it had its share of little quirks just as vista does now.

I never thought i'd be formatting my brand new computer right out of the box and redoing everything, but I must say I'm glad I did put it on XP.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

MS reccomends 1g, 512 is a stated minimum (at least on the home premium box). I upgraded to dual boot xp/vista over xp and upgraded to 2gig. Had to exchange the memory and ran Vista on 512 for two weeks. It was a bit sluggish but it ran with aero enabled and with all services and features running that Vista starts by default. Nothing in Home premium was disabled by default because memory was low. Boot up was not significantly slower than XP. Therefore, my guess would be that Pamela can run Vista basic with 512. Look at the box. Vista basic is very basic. As such, I don't think you can honestly compare Vista Basic's performance to Home Premium performance nor their respective hunger for resources. While it may not be comparing apples to oranges, comparing Basic to Premium is most assuredly comparing lemons to limes.

While I was dealing with my memory issues, I had occassion to run on 1g for a few days and as such i too did not find it slow. I wouldn't go back to less than 2 gigs now, but 1 gig is more than adeqaute.

To run a new computer for thirty minutes and decide to reformat is unrealistic. It takes several hours just to delete all the "bonus" offers and discover that UAC is a big performance hit. Not to mention the time it takes for the prefetch files to kick in. There's a bit more to this issue than just ram.

Re: vista made my laptop slow.

After a little trial and error, I have found out why Vista is slow on most laptops... It is not your settings and may not even be the RAM. Vista is very graphics intensive and almost all stock laptops come with slow video chips that share memory with the system. Check your video settings. If you have less than 128MB of dedicated video memory, you are pretty much up a creek. If the video chips share 256MB of your 512MB then there is only 256MB left for the System. I had to take back the first Vista laptop I bought -- Dual core CPU and 2GB of RAM -- Even Tetris-like games were choppy, because of the lack of video hardware.
