Laptop and the blue screen of death

Hi guys.

This ones really baffling and annoying, I think it must be hardware related. It started happen spontaneously without any changes to hardware or software. My laptop constantly crashes to screen of death and then dumps memory and reboots. Also often on reboot it wants to do a disk check, and most of the time, reorganises all of my files, and then corrupts the hard drive so it doesnt boot. I've notice a few times its been to do with atapi.sys, but other times it's been different. Could it be a driver problem, or a card, I really dont hope its a case of replacing parts.

Cheers.

Scott.

Re: Laptop and the blue screen of death

HI there,
An acquaintance experienced something similar.
It was solved by unplugging his dvd drive, which allowed him to boot properly, then getting rid of daemon tools & the infamous sptd.sys file.
After this was done his dvd and notebook worked fine.
A complete guess on his part.
I'm sure I've read of this happening to a few folk, and hope it helps.

Hi Scott,

This may seem obvious, but did you try safe mode and last known good config?

Re: Laptop and the blue screen of death

Laptop is currently back up and running, so I am able to use it, but if I allow it to do the disk check after its crashed, it usually moves all the files around and corrupts it.

What did you mean by safe mode/LKGC Matt, did you mean it as a means of getting into the computer? Or for running it in safe mode to see if it crashes. Only trouble is the crashes are spontaneous.

Re: Laptop and the blue screen of death

safe mode success would indicate software
no safe mode would indicate h/ware
lkgc=last known good configuration
do you receive any error message when it crashes
