Cry You're gonna love this: I've LOST my CD/DVD!

It's a fact. I've never used this laptop for either a CD or DVD and today was the day. You know where all your drives should be sitting next to each other -- C:, D: (the HP Recovery), Printers, etc.? Nope. It's not there. Not only that, I've been on this STUPID laptop since about noon w/ only a couple of quick breaks searching, researching and doing something someone ELSE insisted I do which involved the following:
"click on your My Computer icon and click on "View system information" under the System Tasks area at the top left hand corner of the window. Next, choose the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button. Once in there, look through the list for the DVD/CD ROM drives and click on the little plus sign ( + ) to expand it. At least one item should come up under that heading. If one does, it means that your CD ROM device is connected and that it does have power. If nothing comes up, you may have some internal connection problems with the power and the ribbon cables." Now, I doubt that's the problem because uh, this is a laptop!! Then:
".) Go to Start, Run and type in "regedit" (without the quotes) to open up the Windows Registry Editor.

2.) Find the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class" listing.

3.) Under the Class entry, double click on "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}."

4.) Next, in the right hand window pane, click only once to select the UpperFilters entry.

5.) Verify that the UpperFilters entry is highlighted and click on Delete, then click on Yes.

6.) Now, go back up to the right hand pane and click only once to select the LowerFilters entry.

7.) Make sure the LowerFilters option is highlighted and click on Delete, then click on Yes.

8.) Close out the registry editor by going to File, Exit."

Long story short, KILL ME NOW! Naturally, I did all that, sure I can fix things eventually but get a load of it: Now when I go to Start - up to where I'm supposed to be able to click on My Computer, guess what? It's now a TREE!! I can't stand it!!

And that's how I came to say a couple of bad words and nearly throw my laptop out in the driveway. Please oh please can anyone help me UNdo whatever I've done?

Many thanks to you geniuses!!
Sami~

Hi Samantha (or do you prefer Sami~)

You do seem to have got in a bit of a mess so let's see what we can do to sort you out. First, could you post your system specs so that we can see what we are dealing with. The best way to do this is to use Everest. Details of where to get Everest and how to use it can be found in this article. When you run Everest select summary under Computer in the left hand pane. Please attach a screenie (you may need two if you have to scroll down to see all the results) of the results. If you know how to attach a screenie ignore this next bit; if not, read on. With the results page of Everest maximised, press the Print Screen button on the top row next to F12. Open Paint (in Accessories) and click on edit and from the dropdown menu select paste. Save the image as a .jpg Do the same with the lower half of the results page if you have to scroll down. To attach the images to your reply, make sure you use Reply rather than Quick reply, or if you've gone into Quick Reply, select Advanced underneath the message box. At the top of the message box, to the right of the smilie, you'll see a paper clip. Click on this and a dialogue box will open which will allow you to upload your image(s). When you've uploaded your images, close the window and press the paperclip again. Click on the image names to attach them. You should have something like this.

everest.JPG

That should be enough to be going on with for the time being. Post back when you've done that.
Regards,
John.

Angry Re: You're gonna love this: It's worse yet!

Well John ... I can't thank you enough for all you've done for me! But it's no use. I may as well ... I don't know, throw it away, get a new laptop, I don't know what to do. My Frustration Meter is OFF THE CHART right now!

I followed your directions to the letter. In fact, I've BEEN following them for exactly 2 hours, 3 min. It would appear my "print screen" button does NOT function and yes, I remembered to use the "fn" key as well. I've tried my level best to do everything I can to save the report in .bmp format so Paint will open it but -- no dice!! I know it won't copy/paste the way you'd like, I don't know what to do at this point. Really, I'm near tears even though I realize that's a no-no. I'm sorry.

Additionally, my list of "problems" is growing. I rodeo and I've been out of state but returned early after I was released from the hospital. I have pain pills which I'll take later because, well, Hydrocodone and making sense don't mix, plus I have to tend the horses shortly ... and [i]very slowly.[i] My "print screen" doesn't work. I did get the "My Computer" tree gone! I kept digging around until 4.00 AM and located the setting ... Wait! Did I not get "print screen" because my laptop isn't attached to my P/S/C? It's over at my parents house right now and they're out of state. Further, my CD-Rom door is jammed. So I stuck a paperclip in it to release it, put a dvd in it and do you think for one minute Mr. Hateful Laptop recognized it? No dice!

I did not locate ONE SINGLE reference to ANY CD/DVD-Rom in the report. However, when I was trying to open the report that I'd saved to my desktop w/ Paint -- this is a mystery to me -- I ran across a reference to Windows: inf -- cdrom Setup Information and cdrom.pnf precompiled Setup Information. What the heck is that?? In better than 12 hours yesterday I couldn't locate one single reference to cdrom, dvd, cd, nothing. And I did search hidden folders! I just don't know ... This laptop is about to hit the asphalt driveway though -- that much I do know!

Is there another way I can post this report?? If anyone has any ideas please, please sing out! Otherwise ... It could be a short life for my laptop. And John, I do appreciate your response more than I can say! But don't sweat it, okay? I've just about had all I can take w/ this stupid thing.

Samantha/Sami -- makes no difference. I've been called FAR WORSE!

My, you really seem to have been in the wars, but don't take it out on your poor old laptop I hope I didn't confuse you with my instructions cos you shouldn't have been pressing a function button: I was merely pointing out the location of the Print Screen button, next to the F12 button.
I'm way overdue for sleep but one of my colleagues is about so I'll get him to take a look if he has the time. Otherwise, I'll be back tomorrow, always assuming your laptop is still in one piece by then.
Best wishes,
John.

:S That does seem like a mess. Have you tried system restore? Might be as easy as that, then again ... it might not. Give it a try and see what happens.

Re: You're gonna love this: I've LOST my CD/DVD!

Hi Sami...and a belated Welcome to TSF!

John has asked me to see if I can get you out of the doldrums with this cantankerous contraption of a lappy.

First up, if you can help out by telling us all the make; model; and age of your 'beloved' lappy.

Next, when you say that your "Print Screen" key doesn't work, is because it is sticking; broken; missing or what?

When you hit the "Print Screen" key, nothing visibly happens, until you open "paint" and 'paste' the image that's in the memory of the computer.

Getting back to your first post...when you deleted the upper and lower filters of the Drive, did you immediately reboot 'The Beast'?
If not all that work has been in vain, The Registry is stubborn as a mule and will not change unless it gets to go 'bye byes' for a minute or two (the reboot).

Just so that I can get my 'wooden' head around this...in your second post you make mention of NO reference to any showing of a CD/DVD...does this include in the Device Manager now?

The fastest way to get to the Device Manager to see it is this way...

Right click on the My Computer Desktop Icon > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager....Now in the list there should be a listing for either CD/DVD Drives or Disc Drives, just click on the + sign and see if its listed...if its not let us know then we will look at the other alternatives.

One final question, has "Mr Hateful Laptop" ever accidently fallen off any of seats of the car, at any stage in its checkered career?

Sorry if I seem to be going over the same ground again, but these little snippets will definitely turn the spotlight on this contraption so that we can determine why it persistently is misbehaving.

Post back with these helpful answers and we will all roll our sleeves up to see what we can do for you and the lappy.

P.S: I sincerely hope that you are on the mend after your rodeo accident.

Kind Regards,

Re: You're gonna love this: I've LOST my CD/DVD!

If you can't get a screen shot, just right click in the right window of the everest summary, select "copy all". Come back to the thread, put your mouse pointer in the reply box, rite click - select paste. It's just a copy and paste operation that way or copy and paste into paint and upload it that way without going through the print screen process

You might start your investigation with pressing F2 when you start your lap to enter cmos setup to see if the drive is there and if it's enabled. If it is, if you have a bootable cd, try to boot to it to determine if its a hardware issue or a windows issue.

start>rite click my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager>expand ide controller>rite click on primary ide channel>properties>advanced settings> check to see if automatic detection is enabled. You will be able to recognize the rom drive- it's dma setting will be/should be dma2

Re: You're gonna love this: I've LOST my CD/DVD!

Hello, John: It's my fault about the "print screen" button. Usually -- really, this is the truth -- I'm more computer savvy than the average bear but w/ all that's been happening plus NEW problems w/ this Devil Machine I can't keep anything straight in my head anymore. Please accept my apology, it truly was my fault! The more I try to fix this thing the worse it gets! Now it doesn't know I'm the Administrator (actually, the ONLY USER) and that's prohibiting many things -- for example, somehow my antivirus went down, I went to MSCONFIG to enable it but guess what? I CAN'T! It doesn't know I'm the administrator! I checked "user accounts". Yup, I'm the administrator but Devil Machine doesn't know how to read, I guess. So now I'm sitting here w/ NO ANTIVIRUS! Can it get worse? Oh yes ...

JackSparrow (I soooo love him in those movies!!), I thought of System Restore however, I seem to have been replaced as Adminstrator by the Devil Machine (I'm convinced this thing has a mind of his own!) so I have no privileges. Further, were I sure when I lost my E:drive that would be more plausible of an idea. It could have been January for all I know. But I thank you kindly. I know often something you think is a catastrophe is actually easily fixed, sitting right in front of your face but you can't see it. I only wish it were that simple ...

Chauffer2 -- I hate to get into this because it's nothing but bad news. I called HP for help earlier. My warranty expired two days before. I don't know whether to cry or bake a cake!! So it looks like it's a year old. Wait, I can give you all the information you need via Belarc Advisor. I'll post the info below! (Finally! I had a good idea!)

Hi Sami~,

Not exactly having the best of luck are you? Sorry, I shouldn't laugh.
Anyway, before you post your Belarc results make sure you go through them and edit out your product keys, cos Belarc has a nasty habit of displaying them for all the world to see.

Regards,
John.

EDIT: Looks like you were too quick for me. You should still have time to edit. If not I'll go back and do it.

Re: You're gonna love this: I've LOST my CD/DVD!

Now: The print screen key works fine. I was a moron.
The Device Manager has not one single reference to any drive except the C:drive. The D:drive is the recovery which is LOCKED! My E:drive is gone, gone, gone. The only red x or question mark or whatever it is sits on the broadcom lan thing.
It's funny you ask about whether Devil Machine has ever taken a tumble. The one I had previous to this one hit the deck, oh, at least 50 times w/ nary a problem. This one tumbled perhaps 12" onto a carpeted floor one time but I saw nothing wrong at the outset. It actually lives in a metal laptop case. I wanted to keep it safe. HAHAHA!!!!! For all the good it did.
And since I lost the screen shot I'll copy and paste the info y'all have asked for.

I can't tell you how much it helps to know someone's on my side. I found a repair dude -- a good friend of a very good friend of mine -- and he wants $149 just to LOOK at Devil Machine! Seriously, when I said I'm in tears w/ frustration over this thing --I tell you what: Yesterday I had a shrink appt. I was so upset (other "little things" have added up as well) she tried to admit me for (what she called) a "brief respite." I don't THINK so! Next thing you know I'm in a padded room!! I just have so much going on here ... I have a fractured femur, I have Devil Machine, I promised my parents I'd do some landscaping ... It just goes on and on. Don't worry. I'll either survive all this or not.

My apologies: I did this right away. I have three IDE's, checked and automatic detection is indeed enabled.

Sigh. I'm depressed. If YOU geniuses can't figure this out ... I may as well put Devil Machine out of its misery, pitch it out the window on the freeway tomorrow ...

Re: You're gonna love this: I've LOST my CD/DVD!

Hi Samantha,

Windows is not detecting the drive, so it is time to see if the BIOS can.

Reboot, and when you see the HP logo, tap F1.

In the BIOS, you should see a main screen with some other sections. Search around the BIOS to see if you see a CD/DVD/optical drive detected. The keys for navigating the BIOS are listed on screen. NOTE: If you see it in the boot order, this does not necessarily mean it is connected.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but can you open the drive by pressing the button? And does the light on the drive light up?

Since laptop IDE interface and power connectors are combined into one connector, if the drive light lights up and shows the drive is receiving power, then the interface is also securely connected.

My System

I'm in hell ...

I'll give it a shot, Matt but I don't know if it'll work. Suddenly Devil Machine thinks I'm not the Administrator -- I found that out last night while I tried to enable my virus scan which became disabled I have no clue how. Here's the thing: Not only am I the Admin., I'm THE ONLY USER!!!!!!!!!!

Further, did all that stuff I posted above make ANY sense to ANYONE? This thing's got me in tears, I tell you what. I called HP on Friday -- my warranty expired on Wednesday. So I guess we know it's a year old now. $&@*#%$!!!!!!!!!!!!
