Computer Turning Itself Off

Hey! My laptop has recently been struggling. It seems to randomly turn itself off and I have to turn it back on again. It is like it shuts down but instantly. I believe that this may have to do with the fact that it gets so hot! Every time it turns itself off the bit near the power cord is really hot! Burning in fact. Even as I type this I can hear the fan on but it's still really hot. Can anyone help please?

Sorry to hear about your laptop problems. When you turn on your laptop, go into task manager and check the cpu usage of the pc and find out what service is taking up all of the cpu usage.

Run this program http://www.pbus-167.com/ and see what the temps are.

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

Thank you both for your replys. I will answer you both.

flynshue: I have noticed that so far this mainly happens when I have MSN open (Cam and Microphone). Right now I just have MSN and Firefox open and my CPU is at 2-4%, As soon as I go on webcam and microphone (I do this a lot as I talk to family members/girlfriend etc) It shoots up to 100% with MSN taking all the CPU. This has been happening for quite some time.

Terrister: I downloaded and run the program and right now my temps are:
CPU: 73
HD: 37

I don't know if that is good or bad. When it gets really hot again I will run the program and post the temperature.

Thank you both! Any other suggestions?

Edit: The fan just turned on. These are the temperatures:

CPU: 89
HD: 40

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

That temp is very high. Give the unit a very good cleaning with canned air. The fan should be turning on before the temps get in the 80's.

With the notebook hardware control, set it to dynamic switching and see if the temps drop.

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

It is a can of clean air used to clean things. We use it a lot in computer repair. Look at office equipment stores, computer stores or a place like Radio Shack.

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

Thank you, I'll take a look around. Meanwhile I just took my laptop downstairs and used a vacum cleaner on the fan area. It made the fan spin and alot of dust was removed, alot more than what I was expecting.

The temperature is now:

CPU: 42
HHD: 32

It's alot cooler, but I have only had it on for 10 minutes with just MSN and Firefox open.

Also, I just made this stand out of a bit of wood and 2 nails and I have proped the back of my laptop on the two nails so it gives alot more air under the laptop. Things seem okay right now! I'll post back if anything happens.

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

Edit: (I couldn't find the edit button, so I am sorry for the double post)

With MSN (including 2 webcams and microphone) and firefox the temperature ranges from 50-58. ALOT better than my previous 95. Also, CPU seems to be around the 50%-60% mark, a vast improvment of the usual 100%. I see a light at the end of the tunnel!

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

A vacuum works ok, but the canned air will get out even more. Glad to see your temps a lot lower.

You can buy a laptop cooling stand with fans on them. The aluminum ones work best.

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

That would be perfect! Any suggestions? (Website, pictures etc)

I live in the United Kingdom so a UK company would be the best bet. I'll take a look on amazon.

Thanks for all your help!

Re: Computer Turning Itself Off

The best cooling pad is the Bytecc NC-500. It has the most CFM, and the fans are reversable and upgradable.

There Titan also has a good one, though they make several other bad ones. Their good one is much more confortable on the lap. If you want that one, look at the reviews first to make sure it is the qualoty one.
