doesn't recognize the cd/dvd drive anymore?

My friend has a new HP Pavilion dv6000 Entertainment Laptop that he bought from a friend who has since moved away. When he got it everything was working fine & now all of a sudden it wont recognize the cd/dvd drive. He says he didnt do anything to it but I cant guarantee that.
When you put a cd in the drive, it acts like its going to play it, it makes the sounds like its running, then nothing. In my computer it just shows the C drive & the HP recovery drive, no CD/DVD drive.
I looked in device manager & its as if there is no cd drive at all, it shows nothing having to do w/ one even being installed.
Any suggestions??

If you need any other information about the computer, just let me know & I will get it to you asap.

p.s. I am currently using the puter that is having the issue, if that helps or will help.

Hi, you could check the bios settings by pressing F2 or Delete (or whatever it instructs you to press) during start-up.

first try uninstalling the device from the device manager rebooting and see if it is recognised after windows reinstalls
if not remove the upper and lower filters instructions here
