[resolved]Restarting the same Old process

I have an IBM Thinkpad that operates on win98 and has a ram of 97,652KB RAM, 20GB of HDD

Whenever I switch on it gives the following;

Switch on: 097728 KB OK
173

Then goes on to Error

00176
00163
OK or Cancel

When click cancel it gives error
00176
00163

When I click OK theres the screen prompting me to update the time, when I update the time to current time and click OK

It gives 097728 KB OK and then it loads the operating system. This happens everytime I startup the machine. Any idea why this happens.

Re: Restarting the same Old process

Hello James and Welcome to TSF.
It sounds to me like a dead CMOS battery. In order to verify this could you post the model number of your Thinkpad? I.E T20, E600, etc.

Thank you,

Matt

Re: Restarting the same Old process

Hello again James.
I was correct it's a dead CMOS battery ("backup battery" as listed in the Maintenance Manual).
It is easy enough to change. Simply open the memory cover on the bottom of the laptop. The battery is located next to the ram. Below is a link to the maintenance manual. Scroll to page 62 for instructions.

This is the battery you're looking for Part# 02K6498.
( I am not endorsing the etailer below as I have no knowledge of thier reliabilty. The link is only for visual purposes. It may be a reliable vendor, I've never dealt with them so I can't say.)http://www.lowcostbatteries.com/ibm_...4-fslash-2.htm

Have a good day,
Matt
