(resolved)CD drive not found.
this seems to be a common problem- but i have not found a solution that has worked for me yet...
I have recently replaced the HDD on my laptop - prompting a vanilla install of windows XP pro. The problem is that I cannot access the combination DVD/CDR drive under windows. tracing the problem back to source, I see that... 1- there is no CD-Drive listed under device manager 2- there are no problems with any other devices listed in device manager. 3- the entries for ATAPI CD model & ATAPI CD serial number in BIOS are disabled 4- there is no entry under 'CD-DRIVES' in the boot order. the usual solution (looking on other forums) is down to dodgy CD writing software (MS KB 314060). This does not apply to me - there are no upperFilters / LowerFilters registry entries for the CD drive in my registry. got any ideas ?

Re: CD drive not found.
no thanks, im warm enough.
jumper settings have not changed. actually now i think of it I must have had access to CDR after I installed windows. It must have been lost sometime since then. a check thru event viewer was un helpful - didnot specify if any likely culprit |

Re: CD drive not found.
This sounds kinda silly, but I had a customer last week with a similar problem and when we opened up the case, we found that the IDE cable was unplugged from the motherboard. It doesn't hurt to double check you know. Good Luck.

Re: CD drive not found.
indeed it does!
in short: the cd drive has becom partially unplugged from the laptop. in long (may be of interest - i guess some of you are pc support pros) when replacing my HDD i hastily removed every screw from the PC case (pointless exercise- as you probly know - the HDD sinply slots in behind the battery). one of those screws retains the CD drive - I guess I failed to do it back up tightly enough. the clue was that the CD panel did not sit perfectly flush with the side of the laptop case. oddly enough - although the cd drive disappeared from bios + windows, it still span when a CD was placed in the tray. i guess the power pins where just about connected but the data pins not ? :anway - thanks for your help
